Stronger Together Peer Support Groups

02-18-2020 6:30 pm -8:00 pm
Free

Formed Families Forward hosts Stronger Together, peer support groups for teens and young adults ages 14-22, and for parents and caregivers. We believe that youth and young adults really are stronger when they share their experiences and work together to improve their own lives and the systems that exist to help youth and families.

Our youth and young adult group is designed for teens and young adults age 14-22 who have lived experiences in one or more service systems such as:
-Social Services (foster care, child welfare, family services)
-Special education (learning or emotional disability or other condition)
-Mental health services
-Substance use treatment and recovery

Parents and caregivers have their own group meeting at the same time in the same building and is open to all parents and caregivers who seek peer support, regardless if they have a child in the youth/young adult peer group.

Groups meet twice monthly in Fairfax, and enrollment is open. Groups are facilitated by professional clinicians. A light dinner is served before group meetings begin. There is NO CHARGE for participation in Stronger Together groups. Due to the continuing nature of peer support, regular group attendance is expected.

The group will meet on the following Tuesdays:
2019: October 1, 15 and 29, November 12, December 3 and 17
2020: January 7 and 14, February 4 and 18, March 10 and 24, April 14 and 28, May 12 and 26

Please visit our website at www.FormedFamiliesForward.org for more information.

Loudoun Connect: Refresh Your Parenting and Problem Solving Tool Kit

02-24-2020 6:00 pm -8:00 pm
Free

Caring for a child who has special education needs or has experienced trauma can be challenging. Come battle the mid-year blues with Yolonda Thompson, Family Program Manager of SCAN Family Programs and Kelly Henderson, Ph.D., Executive Director of Formed Families Forward. This winter workshop will help refresh your parenting and problem-solving tool kit with strategies to build resiliency and address mid-school year challenges. Families and educational professionals will come away with practical tools they can use at home and in the classroom.

Families are encouraged to bring questions and documents such as Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) to problem solve challenges they and their child are experiencing at home and in the classroom.

Session is FREE; please register at https://refreshtoolbox.eventbrite.com or at www.FormedFamiliesForward.org. Inclement weather date is Monday, March 23, 2020.

Open to all interested parents, caregivers, and professionals, though content will address issues of particular relevance to foster, adoptive and kinship families. We offer training and support to foster, adoptive and kinship families raising children and youth with special needs. Older teens and young adults are welcome to attend. Please note child care for younger children is not available.

Light refreshments will be served at 6 PM; formal program starts at 6:30 PM. No child care is available.
